Can a Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty Cause Blindness?

If you remember my post about whether tear trough filler can cause blindness, you’ll remember that I reassured you that the artery supplying the retina is located on the nose. It’s not under the eye.  Your next question may have then been, “am I at risk of blindness from a liquid nose job then?”

There is a risk of blindness with a liquid rhinoplasty for this reason. However, the risk is very low unless you have: 1. Had a surgical rhinoplasty previously 2. Had trauma to the area such as a broken nose (More on that later).

Who is at risk of this Complication?

In most people the artery that supplies the retina goes down the side of your nasal bridge. If you’re someone who wants to adjust the profile of your nose, then the nasal bridge is the area that is injected with filler. Injecting along the centre means that the risk of occluding this vessels very low.

However, if you’re someone who has had trauma or surgery in the area this vessel may have moved.  In such cases further imaging would be required (such as ultrasound assisted injection) to ensure that this is avoided.

Here’s my video on the subject if a visual representation is bit easier to understand
